Tucson police investigating death of man who broke into home as homicide

Tucson police said they are investigating the suspicious death of a man who died Saturday evening after breaking into another man’s home as a homicide.

Officers responded to a duplex near Speedway Boulevard and Silverbell Road at around 11 p.m. to conduct a welfare check where they found an unresponsive man inside the residence.

Police and fire personnel began life-saving measures on the man, later identified as 46-year-old Michael Perez, but later pronounced him dead at the scene.

Police said Perez had left his home shouting in an “excited, disoriented state” before entering another person’s home.

The homeowner, who had just returned to the residence, told Perez to leave before the two got into a physical fight. Officials said Perez eventually lost consciousness and never recovered.

The homeowner was treated for minor injuries sustained during the fight. Officers made no arrests, though detectives will present the case to the Pima County Attorney’s Office, police said.

Police did not say what caused Perez to lose consciousness, whether any weapons were involved or if any individuals besides Perez and the homeowner were at the scene.

It was not immediately clear if police had identified a suspect in Perez’s death.
